Each snowman is started on the pottery wheel. After the forms are thrown on the wheel, a hand sculpted face is attached. The pieces are then cleaned up to look pretty, and bisque fired at a slightly lower temperature than a typical bisque. Each piece is then hand painted with glaze, and fired in a Raku firing. Each snowman is heated up to about 1800 degrees, and when the kiln gets to temperature, the snowmen are pulled out of the hot kiln with metal tongs, and placed into a metal garbage can with newspaper or leaves. The carbon from the fire enters the crazing in the glaze (small cracks,) and creates the crackle effect. After that, each piece is torched to clean up smoke residue from the reduction barrel. Each snowman is handled several times to create a holiday treat that will last a lifetime.
